A Thousand Words - Body Lines in ATS

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

In my classes, we talk a lot about the importance of body line American Tribal Style. In my experience, I find Carolena Nerriccio to be a visual artist of the human form--when developing moves over the years, every creative decision has been anchored in strong lines, presenting the body in the most flattering and powerful way.  It is these striking, editorial shapes which make tribal bellydance so uniquely riveting.

In class, we often discuss the moves as a smooth and seamless series of moving images.  We talk about the idea that a photographer snapping away should be able to capture the key shapes--those magic moments when we are expressing the innate power and grace of the movement.

So ya wanna play a little game with me? Let's play "What move is this?" Below are a series of ATS dancers and troupes performing, followed by a list of common ATS movement names.  You try to match the image with the move they are demonstrating.  Take a look and see how every movement has an iconic shape, body line, gaze, presentation--every element of the Classic and Modern ATS vocabulary considers the body line to suit the overall aesthetic.

For example, here's an easy one, from the lovely dancers of MOIRAI TRIBAL in London:

Anyone who knows their ATS from a hole in the wall recognizes this dramatic posture as part of the Camel or Camel Walk.  Look at the long line of their arms, mirroring the graceful angle of their extended legs, their gaze down and to the left, with the ribcage lifted and strong anchoring the lowered center of gravity.

You ready to give it a go? Here are 10 images, so you can try to place the moves from the image alone.  Below those you will find the list of moves to choose from if you need a little nudge here or there (listed is what we call it in my classes, with the common usage name in official ATS parlance).  I have also included two bonus partner moves/combos not listed in the multiple choice--BONUS POINTS!  Comment with your answers.  I will list the answers in a future post.  After the break, here we go!

Class Newsletter: New session tonight!

Thursday, November 5, 2009

TONIGHT!
The next new session of Tribal Bellydance with Sharon Moore begins tonight at 7:30pm.

First it's Level 1 Foundations!
Get your groove on learning the movements which comprise the basis of tribal bellydance. Feel stronger, more flexible, and have FUN! If you haven't registered yet, never fear, there is room! Or register online right now at http://www.mandalatribal.com/classes/register

Then at 8:30pm it's Level 2b - Skills n' Drills!
This session topic is open to *all levels*, but it is recommended that you have taken at least a few sessions of Level 1 and/or are familiar with basic bellydance concepts.

~ This session's Skills n' Drills special topic is Creative Combos with Finger Cymbals!
Inspired by my recent intensive study with Jamila Salimpour - one of the Mothers of American Bellydance as we know it - I will be sharing with you various combinations of movement paired with finger cymbals patterns. We'll start with some deep muscle isolation drills to get our hearts pumping, then each class we will dig into a couple different finger cymbal patterns, a couple movements and variations, and then pair them together into a combination we can dance together. Each week will build in complexity as we increase our confidence with finger cymbals while dancing. Bring your finger cymbals and be ready for a fun, challenging workout.

~ Don't worry if you don't have a lot of finger cymbal experience!
We will be breaking the skills down piece by piece, and each dancer can work at their own comfort level. I definitely recommend this class for dancers of all skill levels and styles to add some new movement and rhythm skills to their repertoire.

ABOUT CLASSES

Seattle Tribal Bellydance classes are a dynamic blend of ancient dance with modern, funky stylizations. Teacher Shay Moore is the only dancer in the world to have achieved upper level certifications in both FatChanceBellyDance and Gypsy Caravan teaching styles, as well as trained in Jamila Salimpour Level 1 technique; providing her students a uniquely well-rounded dance learning experience. Her attentive and nurturing teaching style makes even the most difficult dance skills accessible for students of all levels, and makes having fun an equal priority to developing strong dance technique. Her joy of teaching was celebrated with her nomination for Teacher of the Year in 2007 in the peoples choice awards in Zaghareet Magazine.

Class Newsletter October 1, 2009

Thursday, October 1, 2009

Hello lovellies! Here is the latest class news!

NO CLASS FIELD TRIP NEXT WEEK
Just a notice to Monday night students that we will NOT be taking our field trip to Pyramid Lounge next week as previously planned. Renee has been struggling with an injured back, and was forced to pull out of the performance, and inFusion along with her. So class will be held as usual next week.

SKILLS N' DRILLS CLASS TONIGHT
On a related note, Renee will still be teaching the Skills n' Drills class tonight, though she will be taking it a lot easier in her demonstrating than usual. You will still get a great challenging workout, and some new tricks under your belt for isolations and strength building. Each class has a series of drills focused on certain muscle groups, and the class wraps up with some movement drills, bringing your technique back around to common tribal movement concepts.

WANT A LITTLE MORE ZILL TIME?
Level 1 is beginning to rock basic finger cymbals/zills beginning this session. Week 3 of each session will be an introduction to finger cymbals and some simple drills to build your dexterity and sense of rhythm. If you are any level student who would like a refresher on zill technique, and would like to spend a full class practicing your foundations and working to improve your skills, then for only $12 drop-in you can join us next Monday or Wednesday and really dig into your zills!

If you are a Level 1 student who still has not purchased your finger cymbals, get your order in ASAP!
My favorite are the Afghanis: http://dwp.bigplanet.com/saroyan/tribalperformances/
(Fat Chance Signature Afghani Zills can be purchased here: http://tinyurl.com/y93aj6g )

Much dance love,

This special session is open to all levels and all styles--there is no minimum experience requirement on this session. Drop-ins are welcome, but please note that the series will build weekly on previous lessons.

Erik's classes
"The Middle Eastern hand drum is sometimes called a tabla, dumbek, darbooka. It is a goblet shaped drum that is at the heart of the middle eastern music. It's a relatively inexpensive instrument to learn and an easy instrument to carry around places. Learn from the beginning the correct habits, so you can progress efficiently (and of course practice)."

Erik is a patient and effective instructor. He studies with drummers all over the world, and performs with beloved local band House of Tarab. Drumming is great for all ages, and is a fun way for the significant others of belly dancers to take part in belly dance world.

*Please bring a dumbek or similar hand drum. If you have any spares to loan, please bring them as well. ***If you do not have a drum, you will still be able to get a lot out of this class, and can bang on a pot or practice on your lap and the floor while you learn the rhythms and technique this class series has to offer.***

Classes are $12 drop-in, or $30 for the full three weeks payable the first night of class.
